TL;DR - Summary

  • What are ACH processing companies? - ACH processing companies are services that help businesses send and receive money through bank-to-bank transfers on the US ACH network. Businesses use them to collect payments from customers or pay vendors and staff without cards or checks.
  • Which are the leading ACH processing companies? - Stripe, GoCardless, Airwallex, Stax, PaymentCloud and Revolut Business are among the leading options. Each suits a different business, depending on payment volume, billing needs and location.
  • How to choose the right ACH processing company? - The right choice starts with whether the business needs to send payments, receive them, or both. After that, compare recurring billing, software integrations, Same Day ACH, remittance details and pricing.
  • What fees should be compared when choosing an ACH processing company? - The key fees are the cost per transaction, monthly fees, and extra charges for Same Day ACH or returned payments. Flat fees suit large payments, while percentage fees suit small ones.

What are ACH Processing Companies?

ACH processing companies are financial service providers that assist businesses in sending and receiving payments through the U.S. Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. These companies do the technical and banking steps to make each transfer work and ACH moves money directly from one bank account to another.

Businesses use them because ACH is often cheaper and easier than cards or wire transfers. Card payments carry fees that can add up if you make large or frequent payments. Wire transfers can be costly if used on a regular basis. ACH processing suits payments that repeat or need to move directly between bank accounts, such as invoices, payroll, subscriptions and vendor payments.

There are many providers that provide ACH processing. Each is built for a different need. Stripe is known for online checkout and recurring billing. GoCardless is known for direct debit and recurring payments. Airwallex and Revolut Business offer multi-currency business accounts. Stax and PaymentCloud are known for merchant processing, including for higher-risk businesses.

⚠️ COMMON MISCONCEPTION

ACH isn't an international payment network at all. It only moves money between US bank accounts on the Nacha network, nothing further.

Which ACH processor makes sense really depends on the business model, though Stripe, GoCardless, Airwallex, Stax, PaymentCloud, and Revolut Business come up as the strongest options across different use cases.

How To Choose the Right ACH Payment Company?

Picking the right ACH payment company comes down to payment direction, how deep the integrations go, settlement speed, remittance data handling, and total cost.

Decide whether you need to send or receive

Start by figuring out whether the business mainly needs accounts payable, accounts receivable, or genuinely both. A solution built for collecting customer payments won't necessarily work well for paying suppliers, since the workflow, approvals, and reporting requirements differ enough to matter.

Check integrations

Integrations are worth checking closely too. For businesses processing large volumes, connecting to accounting or ERP software saves a real amount of manual effort. Native integrations or APIs that automate payment initiation, reconciliation, and settlement reporting tend to matter more day-to-day than whatever fee sits on the homepage.

Check settlement speed

Settlement speed deserves attention as well. Standard ACH isn't instant by default. Some providers offer faster settlement for an added cost, so businesses with tight cash flow should compare actual settlement timelines rather than assuming "ACH" means the same thing everywhere it's advertised.

Compare remittance and reconciliation features

Remittance and reconciliation features matter too, particularly for accounts-receivable teams, where matching a payment to the right invoice is nearly as important as accepting the payment in the first place. A system that makes that connection easy reduces manual reconciliation considerably.

Compare the complete pricing model

Then there's the full pricing picture. ACH tends to be cheaper than credit-card processing, but the headline transaction fee rarely tells the whole story. Transaction fees, monthly subscription charges, failed-payment fees, refund or dispute fees, FX charges, withdrawal or settlement fees, and faster-payment fees all deserve a look before committing. A provider charging a low ACH percentage can still turn expensive fast if it stacks on fixed or international charges elsewhere.

Expert advice

Don't pick an ACH provider on its advertised transaction fee alone. Look at what happens when a payment fails, needs to be returned, or has to be reconciled. If you're processing regular payments, those operational costs can matter far more than saving a few basis points on the headline fee.

Why Don't ACH Processing Companies Work for Indian Businesses?

Standard US ACH processing doesn't connect to an ordinary Indian bank account because domestic ACH payments require a US banking account and routing infrastructure that Indian accounts don't have.

US ACH transactions run entirely inside the US banking ecosystem. Indian bank accounts work off different identifiers altogether, IFSC codes, and different domestic systems such as NEFT, RTGS, and UPI, none of which map onto the ACH side.

That doesn't mean an Indian business can never receive an ACH-originated payment, though. It means the business generally needs an intermediary or international account structure that can accept the US payment first, before anything actually reaches India.

A US client, for instance, can send money to a US account using their normal ACH process without any friction on their end. A cross-border payment provider then picks up those funds and remits the equivalent amount to the Indian business separately.

For the client, this ends up considerably simpler. Instead of arranging an international wire and juggling correspondent-bank details, they just pay using domestic US banking information they already know.

For Indian exporters and freelancers, the real question isn't which ACH processor connects to an Indian IFSC, because none of them does. It's which international payment platform can hand the business local US receiving details and settle the funds in India afterwards.

How Does Skydo Help Indian Businesses Receive ACH Payments?

Skydo helps Indian businesses receive ACH payments by providing global receiving accounts that allow international clients to pay locally, with Skydo then settling the funds into the Indian bank account.

Skydo's international accounts give eligible Indian businesses local receiving details in supported currencies. The USD account can go straight to a US client, letting them pay through a local method like ACH instead of arranging a traditional international wire.

The process runs through a few simple steps. Setting up a Skydo account takes around five minutes. The relevant USD, EUR, GBP, or other supported account details get shared with the client. The client pays into the USD receiving account using a local transfer method such as ACH. Skydo then converts the payment at a live rate with zero FX markup and settles the INR amount into the Indian bank account.

Pricing runs at $19 flat for payments up to $2,000, $29 for payments between $2,001 and $10,000, and 0.3% for anything above $10,000.

Every payment also comes with an automatically generated FIRA, which keeps foreign-remittance documentation in order without anyone having to chase it down after the fact.
