What is the S0101 purpose code?

Purpose code S0101 is used when an Indian business sends money abroad as an advance payment for goods it is importing from countries other than Nepal and Bhutan. It covers cases where you pay your overseas supplier before shipment, such as booking inventory, securing raw materials or confirming a purchase order. It does not apply to imports from Nepal or Bhutan, or to payments for services, which follow different RBI purpose codes. Under RBI FEMA guidelines, this outward payment is classified under imports and reported accordingly.

When to use S0101 purpose code?

Use S0101 when you are paying an overseas supplier in advance for goods that will be imported into India, excluding suppliers located in Nepal and Bhutan. It is the correct RBI purpose code for advance import remittances whether you import raw materials, finished goods or capital equipment. S0101 covers the advance payment for the goods themselves, not any related service fees.

When to use a different code:

  • Use the adjacent import of goods purpose code when the payment is not an advance but against documents or shipment
  • Use the relevant service import purpose code when the payment is for services rather than physical goods
  • Use the matching P code when you are receiving money rather than paying

Who typically uses S0101 purpose code?

Indian importers, manufacturers, traders and e commerce businesses that pay overseas suppliers in advance for goods shipped into India from countries other than Nepal and Bhutan. It applies whether you import as a private limited company, LLP, partnership or proprietorship, as long as the transaction is an advance payment for goods from outside India.

Examples of transactions covered

  • Advance payment to a Chinese manufacturer for electronic components that will be shipped to your warehouse in India
  • 30 percent upfront remittance to a German supplier for machinery being imported under a purchase order
  • Booking advance paid to a Vietnamese exporter for textile consignments to be delivered over the next quarter
  • Deposit sent to a US wholesaler to secure inventory for your Indian retail operations before shipment

When NOT to use S0101 purpose code

  • The payment is for imported goods under documents against payment or after shipment rather than an advance (use the regular import of goods purpose code for post shipment payments)
  • The payment is for services such as consultancy, software, freight or commission instead of physical goods (use the appropriate service import purpose code)
  • The payment relates to imports from Nepal or Bhutan, which are covered under separate RBI import purpose codes
  • You are receiving money rather than paying (use the matching P code)

Documents required

To send a payment under S0101, keep the following documents ready so your authorised dealer bank can verify the transaction and report it correctly under FEMA.

DocumentPurpose
Vendor invoice or pro forma invoiceShows supplier details, description of goods, currency, amount and advance payment terms for the import.
Purchase contract or purchase order / statement of workSets out the agreed quantity, price, shipment terms and advance payment conditions for the import transaction.
Form A2 declaration with PANStandard RBI form where you declare the nature and purpose code of the outward remittance, along with your PAN details.
Form 145 under Rule 220Income tax declaration for outward remittances, confirming whether the payment is chargeable to tax in India and the applicable section.

How is a S0101 Purpose Code declared?

Declaring the code is pretty straightforward. Here's how the payment gets tagged and reported.

  1. Receive the supplier documents: Your overseas vendor sends a pro forma invoice or contract showing an advance payment against goods to be imported into India.
  2. Determine taxability: Establish whether the advance payment for imported goods is chargeable to tax in India, since that decides which part of Form 145 you file.
  3. File Form 145: Submit the declaration before remitting, with Form 146 from your CA where the taxable amount exceeds ₹5 lakh in the Tax Year.
  4. Complete Form A2: State the purpose of the outward remittance as S0101 and submit the supporting documents to your bank.
  5. Get your MT103: Once the payment is sent, request the SWIFT MT103 as proof and retain your Form A2 record.
  6. With a traditional bank you handle each step of the payment journey. But with a platform built for cross-border payments, you can preselect a default purpose code so the payments go out smooth.

Common mistakes to avoid

A few common slips can hold up your payment or cause compliance issues. Here's what to watch for.

  1. Confusing advance with regular import payment: Tagging a post shipment or documents against payment remittance as S0101 when it should use the standard import of goods purpose code.
  2. Code and invoice mismatch: The code not matching what your supplier invoice describes, which flags the payment at the bank's compliance check.
  3. Assuming a Rule 220(3) exemption: Skipping Form 145 on a payment that is not clearly within the specified exempt list, which carries a ₹1,00,000 penalty per instance if you are wrong.
  4. Incomplete documents: Missing invoice, contract or Form A2, so the bank holds the remittance until the correct paperwork is provided.
  5. Missing PAN or KYC: Incomplete KYC or PAN details stop the bank from releasing the payment under FEMA and income tax rules.
  6. Using an outward code for an inward receipt: Applying S0101 to money coming in instead of using the matching P code for import advances received.
