Does PayPal use UPI

Yes, PayPal supports UPI, but only for international checkouts through its PayPal World platform, not for domestic payments within India.

  • International checkout: UPI can be chosen as the payment option when buying from foreign websites that accept PayPal.
  • Domestic payments: PayPal does not offer UPI for local payments inside India.
  • Xoom remittances: Xoom, the international money transfer service owned by PayPal, lets senders overseas transfer money straight to a recipient's UPI ID in India.

PayPal's newsroom announced the Xoom UPI integration in December 2020, describing it as a way for NRIs and PIOs to remit money to India in real time. In any PayPal overview of payment methods for Indian users, UPI appears only for cross-border use, since domestic payments within India are not supported.

If you plan to pay with UPI, confirm at checkout that the merchant is outside India and accepts PayPal, and if you are sending money to family in India from abroad, check whether Xoom is available where you live.
