How does Wise calculate fees
Wise calculates fees from three factors: the amount you send, the way you pay for the transfer, and the exchange rate for the currencies involved.
Wise shows the cost upfront, and its fee calculator lets you check the breakdown for a specific transfer before sending. The components that make up the Wise pricing are:
- Fixed fee: A flat charge covers the fixed costs of processing a transfer, and its size depends on the currencies involved.
- Variable fee: A percentage of the amount sent is added on top, and that percentage changes with the currency pair.
- Payment method: Funding the transfer by local bank transfer, debit card or credit card changes the total cost, and bank transfers usually cost less than card payments.
- Exchange rate: Wise converts money at the mid-market rate, the same rate shown on Google or Reuters, without adding a markup to the rate itself.
Many banks and other providers hide extra charges inside the exchange rate they offer, whereas Wise shows its fee separately from the rate.
Wise also reduces the variable fee for large transfers. Once the amount sent passes a threshold, often around 25,000 USD or its equivalent depending on your region, a discounted percentage is applied automatically.
To estimate what a transfer will cost, enter the currencies and the amount on the Wise send money pricing page for your country, and compare the result using different payment methods.
