How fast is PayPal

PayPal is instant for payments between PayPal accounts and at checkout, while bank withdrawals take minutes with Instant Transfer or about 1 to 3 business days with a standard transfer.

How fast PayPal moves money depends on whether you are paying someone, adding funds, or withdrawing to a bank. The timings below come from PayPal's help centre and other published guides, and a PayPal overview for your country will show local variations.

  • Paying another PayPal account: Sending money from your PayPal balance or a linked debit or credit card to another PayPal user completes in seconds, because it is an internal ledger update within PayPal.
  • Online checkout: Paying a merchant with PayPal processes immediately, as long as your funding source approves the charge right away.
  • Adding money by debit card: Topping up your balance from a confirmed debit card takes only seconds.
  • Adding money from a bank account: PayPal says moving money from a linked bank account to your PayPal balance usually takes up to 5 business days.
  • Instant Transfer to a bank or card: Withdrawals to an eligible debit card or bank account typically arrive within minutes, up to about 30 minutes, and carry a small percentage fee.
  • Standard transfer to a bank: Free standard withdrawals typically complete in 1 to 3 business days, though they can take 3 to 5 business days in some regions depending on local banking rules.

Money can also be held before it is available to withdraw. New PayPal accounts or sellers of intangible goods may see temporary security holds of up to 7 or 21 days, so check your account activity if a payment you received is not yet usable.
