What does this custom duty calculator work out?
The custom duty calculator estimates the total customs duty on goods you import into India, and splits it into the part you can claim back and the part that stays a cost. It follows the CBIC assessment order: assessable value first, then basic customs duty and other levies, then IGST.
One set of inputs gives you six numbers:
- Total customs duty: Everything payable at clearance, in rupees and as a percentage of assessable value.
- Duty composition: How the total splits between BCD, surcharge and IGST.
- Assessable value: The rupee value customs charges duty on.
- Landed cost: What the shipment costs you once it clears customs.
- Claim back as ITC: The IGST you can recover as input tax credit.
- Permanent cost: The duty that stays on your books.

How to use the custom duty calculator
The custom duty calculator needs five inputs and your contact details. Every field above "Any additional levies?" is required.
- Pick what you’re importing: Choose the closest category from Electronics, Machinery, Textiles, Auto parts or Personal import.
- Enter the shipment value: Select the invoice currency and type the invoice value of the goods. The CBIC exchange rate fills in on its own.
- Add freight and insurance: Enter the freight you paid. Insurance is prefilled at 1.125%, so replace it with your actual premium if you have one.
- Enter the duty rates: Type the basic customs duty and IGST rates that apply to your product’s HSN code.
- Add any extra levies: If your goods attract Social Welfare Surcharge, AIDC, CVD or compensation cess, enter each as a percentage. Leave the others blank.
- See the breakdown: Enter your name and mobile number to see the complete breakdown.
The result is an estimate built on the rates you enter. Customs assesses the final duty on your Bill of Entry.
What information do you need before you start?
You need your supplier’s invoice, your freight cost and the duty rates for your HSN code. Most of it is already on your shipping documents.
| Input | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Invoice value and currency | Your supplier’s commercial invoice |
| Freight | Your freight invoice, bill of lading or airway bill |
| Insurance | Your insurance certificate. If you don’t have one, keep the 1.125% prefill |
| BCD and IGST rates | The customs tariff entry for your HSN code on the CBIC website, or your customs broker. See import duty rates by product |
| SWS, AIDC, CVD, compensation cess | The same tariff entry. SWS is 10% of BCD for most goods |
| Exchange rate | Nothing to find. The calculator uses the CBIC notified rate |
Get the HSN code right first. The BCD and IGST rates depend on it, and so does every number the calculator returns.
How does the calculator arrive at your customs duty?
The custom duty calculator charges each levy on the base customs uses, in the order customs applies them. That order matters because IGST is charged on the duty-inclusive value.
- Assessable value: (Invoice value + freight + insurance) × CBIC exchange rate.
- Basic customs duty: Assessable value × BCD rate.
- Social Welfare Surcharge: BCD × SWS rate.
- Other levies: AIDC, CVD and compensation cess at the rates you enter.
- IGST: (Assessable value + BCD + surcharge and levies) × IGST rate.
- Total customs duty: BCD + surcharge and levies + IGST.
For example, say you import electronics with an invoice value of USD 10,000 and pay USD 800 in freight. You keep insurance at the 1.125% prefill (USD 112.50). Assume a CBIC rate of ₹88.50 per USD, 10% BCD, 10% SWS and 18% IGST. These rates are for illustration only.
| Step | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Assessable value | USD 10,912.50 × ₹88.50 | ₹9,65,756 |
| Basic customs duty (10%) | 10% of ₹9,65,756 | ₹96,576 |
| Social Welfare Surcharge (10% of BCD) | 10% of ₹96,576 | ₹9,658 |
| IGST (18%) | 18% of ₹10,71,989 | ₹1,92,958 |
| Total customs duty | ₹96,576 + ₹9,658 + ₹1,92,958 | ₹2,99,191 |
Total duty in this example works out to 31% of the assessable value. The next section shows how much of it you get back.

How to read your custom duty result
Your custom duty result separates the cash you pay at clearance from the cost you finally bear. Use the second number when you price the goods.
| Result field | What it means | In the example |
|---|---|---|
| Total customs duty | All duty payable at clearance | ₹2,99,191 |
| Duty as % of assessable value | Total duty divided by assessable value | 31% |
| Duty composition | Share of BCD, surcharge and IGST in the total | 32% BCD, 3% surcharge, 65% IGST |
| Assessable value | The rupee base for duty | ₹9,65,756 |
| Landed cost | Assessable value plus total customs duty | ₹12,64,948 |
| Claim back as ITC | IGST you can recover as input tax credit | ₹1,92,958 |
| Permanent cost | Duty that stays a cost, such as BCD and surcharge | ₹1,06,233 |
In the example, ₹2,99,191 leaves your account at clearance. If you’re GST registered and importing for business, ₹1,92,958 of it comes back as input tax credit, so ₹1,06,233 is the duty you actually bear.
Who uses a custom duty calculator?
Importers use the custom duty calculator before they place an order, before goods land and when they set a selling price. The use changes with who is importing.
GST-registered business importers
You pay IGST in cash at clearance and claim it back later as input tax credit. The calculator shows both figures, so you can plan the cash you need at the port and the cost you carry after the credit.
Personal imports
Pick Personal import as the category. If you aren’t GST registered, there’s no credit to claim, so treat the full total customs duty as your cost.
Pricing and supplier comparison
Run the calculator once for each supplier or freight quote. Customs charges duty on freight and insurance as well as the goods, so a lower invoice with costlier freight can land at a higher price.
