TL;DR - Summary

  • What is a FIRA? - A FIRA records an inward foreign payment and helps you reconcile export receipts with invoices. Check the bank-issued document and its details, not just its name.
  • How do you request it from Axis Bank? - Check your registered email for e-Advice, then contact your branch or RM with the credit date, amount and bank reference if you need a copy.
  • What documents and timeline should you expect? - Keep the credit advice, reference and invoice ready. Ask Axis for the checklist, charges and delivery date for your account; there is no single published FIRA deadline for all channels.
  • How does FIRA differ from FIRC? - An advice and a certificate can both record remittance details. For a filing, confirm the required bank-issued evidence rather than assuming every FIRA is invalid or every FIRC is sufficient.

What Is a FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice)?

A Foreign Inward Remittance Advice (FIRA) is a bank-generated record confirming an inward foreign payment. It usually records the remitter, amount, currency, credit date, purpose and transaction reference. Banks may use other names for remittance proof, so ask Axis Bank which advice or certificate applies to your transaction.

Indian exporters and freelancers use remittance advice for accounting, invoice reconciliation and payment evidence. A chartered accountant (CA) can help identify the documents needed for a particular tax or export filing.

For example, a Bengaluru-based freelance developer receives $1,500 from a US client. Their Axis Bank account shows the credit, and the FIRA is the bank's written confirmation of that specific inward remittance, including the amount, currency, sender details, and date.

⚠️ COMMON MISCONCEPTION

FIRA is not automatically unusable for compliance because it is called an advice. The Foreign Exchange Dealers’ Association of India (FEDAI) instructed member banks in September 2023 to issue a Bank Inward Remittance Certificate (BIRC) on bank letterhead, electronically or physically, using the Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC) format. The required evidence still depends on the filing.

Who Needs a FIRA and Why Does It Matter?

Freelancers, service exporters and goods exporters should keep bank-issued proof of overseas receipts alongside their invoices. It helps explain who paid, what the payment covered and how it reached the Indian account. Getting the advice is one record-keeping step, not automatic completion of export or tax compliance.

  • Freelancers: Keep the remittance advice with your invoice, contract and bank statement so your CA can reconcile income and check tax obligations.
  • Exporters: Match payment references to export records. The authorized dealer (AD) bank handles Export Data Processing and Monitoring System (EDPMS) reporting and closure. For an Electronic Bank Realisation Certificate (eBRC), exporters use bank-uploaded Inward Remittance Messages (IRMs) on the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) portal. A FIRA PDF does not itself complete either process.
  • GST claims: For Goods and Services Tax (GST) refunds on exports of services, Rule 89(2)(c) calls for invoice details and relevant Bank Realisation Certificates or Foreign Inward Remittance Certificates. Keep suitable bank-issued evidence. A Letter of Undertaking (LUT) lets eligible exporters export without paying integrated GST upfront; it is not a certificate of payment receipt.
  • Reconciliation: Record each payment reference against the invoice or invoices it settles, including partial payments, fees and currency conversions.

A bank statement and a remittance advice serve different purposes. The statement shows the account credit; the advice can add remitter, currency and purpose details. Save both, along with invoices and any other evidence your CA or bank needs.

How to Request a FIRA from Axis Bank: Step-by-Step

Start the Axis Bank FIRA issuance process by identifying the credited payment and checking whether its advice has already reached your registered email. Axis offers an e-Advice facility for trade alerts, debit/credit advices and inward-remittance notifications. If you need a missing copy or a specific certificate, ask your branch or relationship manager (RM) for the route available to your account.

Via Axis Bank Net Banking

  1. If you use Axis corporate internet banking, sign in and check the trade services enabled for your account.
  2. For a pending inward remittance, Axis documents a Forex → Inward Remittance route to book a rate, upload documents and give settlement instructions. This is not a published FIRA-download procedure.
  3. For copies of trade documents, check the enabled TF Connect facilities or your registered email. Axis describes online debit advices and SWIFT copies through TF Connect; confirm how to obtain your specific inward credit advice with the bank.
  4. If you cannot locate the advice, send a service request through the bank’s supported channel with the credit date, amount and bank reference. Save the acknowledgment.

Axis also lets customers register for e-Advice by submitting an application at a branch. Ask whether your account is subscribed and whether the delivered advice contains the details you need.

Via Branch Visit

  1. Carry a written request letter addressed to the branch manager. It should state the remittance date, amount, sender name, and the reference/UTR number of the transaction.
  2. Bring the bank statement or credit advice, relevant invoice and any identification the branch asks for. Confirm the checklist before visiting; do not assume the same documents apply to every account.
  3. Ask the branch to route your request to the team handling inward remittances or trade services.
  4. Ask for an acknowledgment, any applicable charge and an expected delivery date before leaving the branch.

Via Relationship Manager (RM)

If you have an assigned RM, ask them to help obtain the bank-issued advice for the credited transaction.

  1. Email the RM with the transaction date, credited amount in INR and foreign currency, sender bank details, and the UTR/SWIFT reference number.
  2. Ask the RM to confirm the responsible team, delivery method and expected date, and keep the response with your request.

What Documents Do You Need to Get a FIRA from Axis Bank?

Prepare the transaction details and supporting records before contacting Axis Bank. The bank may need a request letter, credit advice, reference, invoice or purpose declaration, depending on your account and the remittance. Ask for the current checklist rather than treating any four-item list as universal.

  • Request letter or form: It should include the account holder name, account number, remittance date, foreign currency amount, INR credited, sender name and country, and the transaction reference number.
  • Bank statement or credit advice: A printed or downloaded statement showing the credit entry helps the trade desk locate the transaction quickly without delays.
  • Bank reference: Quote the reference on your credit advice. A Unique Transaction Reference (UTR), SWIFT reference or other bank reference can help locate the payment, but these identifiers are not always the same.
  • Identity and account details: Have your account-holder name and account number ready. For a branch request, check which identification documents the bank requires.

Do not assume export documents are unnecessary: the bank may ask for invoices or other records to establish the purpose of a receipt. Goods exports can involve shipping bills; service-export eBRCs use the applicable invoice or export records. A sender’s SWIFT payment confirmation is useful evidence, but is not the recipient bank’s remittance advice.

✅ PRO TIP

Keep the client’s bank payment confirmation, invoice and bank-issued advice together. If a SWIFT MT103 copy is available, save it too. No single pair of documents guarantees a complete tax or compliance file.

How Long Does Axis Bank Take to Issue a FIRA?

Ask Axis Bank for an expected delivery date when you request the advice. Its public e-Advice, TF Connect and online inward-remittance pages do not give a common FIRA issuance deadline for net banking, branch and RM requests. Do not plan a filing around an assumed one-to-four-day turnaround.

ChannelTurnaroundWhat affects it
Net bankingCheck existing advice first; ask for a date if a copy is neededAccount access, e-Advice registration and document availability
Branch visitAgree an expected date with the branchWhether the payment is credited and the request details are complete
RMAsk the RM to confirm a delivery dateThe responsible team, required checks and availability of the advice
  • Remittance still in transit: A sender’s payment confirmation is not proof of credit to your account. Ask the bank whether receipt or anti-money-laundering (AML) checks are still pending.
  • Intermediary banks: A payment routed through an intermediary bank may need tracing before credit. Ask for its status rather than adding an arbitrary number of days to the advice timeline.

For payments received through Skydo, a free FIRA is generated automatically after settlement and can be accessed from the dashboard. This avoids a separate request for each payment’s advice.

What If Your Axis Bank FIRA Is Delayed or Has Errors?

If an advice is missing, first check that the remittance is credited and that your registered email is correct. Follow up with the branch or RM using the payment and request references. If the document contains an error, ask the bank to check it against its records and provide supporting evidence.

If the FIRA Is Delayed

  1. Confirm the remittance has been fully credited to your account. Check your account statement for the INR credit entry and note the UTR number.
  2. If the credit is confirmed but the FIRA has not arrived within the expected window, escalate by email to the branch's forex/trade desk, quoting your request reference number and the UTR of the transaction.
  3. For RM-assisted requests, follow up in writing and ask for a specific status and revised delivery date.
  4. If the request remains unresolved, use Axis Bank’s grievance-redressal process: customer service first, then the nodal officer and principal nodal officer as applicable. Keep the complaint number and earlier correspondence. Use the escalation levels and response times in the bank’s current policy.

If the FIRA Has Errors

Check these details, including the amount and purpose:

  • Sender name: Compare it with the invoice and payment records. A marketplace, payment processor or permitted third-party payer may appear instead of the buyer; ask for an explanation before treating that difference as an error.
  • Currency and amount: Check the currency and gross receipt against the payment records. Reconcile conversion, fees and partial payments with the net credit instead of expecting every amount to match exactly.
  • Reference and purpose: Confirm that the bank reference identifies the right credit and that the purpose code reflects the transaction. Use the bank’s credit advice to check the references.

For a genuine discrepancy, request a correction in writing with the invoice, bank payment confirmation and any explanation of the payer or conversion. Ask your CA how to handle the document if a filing deadline arrives before the bank resolves it.

A mismatch can lead to questions, but it does not automatically mean a tax claim will be rejected. Keep the bank’s correction or written explanation with the original records.

For a correction request at a branch, bring:

  • The original erroneous FIRA
  • The sender’s bank payment confirmation or SWIFT advice, if available
  • A written correction request letter

⚠️ COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Every difference is not an error. A marketplace payout, bank deduction or exchange conversion can explain a mismatch. Document the reason; ask for correction when the bank’s record is actually wrong.

Axis Bank FIRA Issuance Process vs Other Private Banks: Key Differences

Compare the actual digital service and account eligibility, not assumed FIRA turnaround times. Banks distinguish receipt settlement, credit advice and certificates. The table below separates documented services from the checks to make before requesting remittance proof.

  • Document names: FEDAI’s September 2023 instruction describes BIRC advice using the FIRC format. Do not attribute every document’s format to an RBI FIRA template or assume that all banks use identical names.
  • Digital access: Axis’s OIRM and Kotak’s corporate inward-remittance service support settlement online. ICICI also documents digital settlement and BIRC issuance. An online settlement feature is not proof of a self-service certificate download.
  • Planning: Ask each bank whether advice is automatic, where to retrieve it and how long a missing-copy request will take. Confirm these points before a filing deadline.
  • Multiple banks: Keep a separate record of advice access, contact details and payment references for each receiving bank.

⚠️ COMMON MISCONCEPTION

You do not always need a fresh request for each receipt. Axis offers a subscription-based e-Advice service. Check what your account already receives before asking the RM for another copy.

How Does Skydo Simplify Remittance Proof for Freelancers?

With a bank account, first check which advices arrive automatically and how to retrieve missing copies. With Skydo, payment advice is built into the payment workflow.

Skydo generates a free FIRA for each settled payment, available by email and in the dashboard. Keep it with your invoice and verify its details. Automatic advice generation does not replace your responsibility to check tax and export-reporting requirements.

  • Virtual accounts: Skydo provides local receiving account details in markets including the US, UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. Account availability and activation depend on onboarding and verification.
  • Pricing: Standard payment fees are $19 for payments up to $2,000, $29 for payments above $2,000 and up to $10,000, and 0.3% above $10,000, plus 18% GST on the fee. Skydo advertises zero forex markup. Amazon Global Selling has separate pricing.
  • eBRC assistance: Ask Skydo about its eBRC support for your export records. Under DGFT’s system, the exporter generates eBRCs by matching bank-uploaded IRMs with the relevant shipping bills or service-export records. This is separate from EDPMS closure.
  • EDPMS assistance: Skydo offers support with export-payment records and closure coordination. The AD bank remains responsible for updating and closing the relevant EDPMS entries; an automatically generated FIRA does not close them.
  • Settlement and support: Skydo advertises settlement within one business day. Check the expected date for your payment, as banking hours, holidays and compliance checks can affect timing. India-based support is available by WhatsApp, email and phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is FIRA the same as FIRC?

No. FIRA means Foreign Inward Remittance Advice; FIRC means Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate. Banks also use BIRC, or Bank Inward Remittance Certificate. The title alone does not decide whether a document meets a filing requirement. Ask for the required bank-issued evidence and check its transaction details.
