How to use Wise
To use Wise, register for a Personal or Business account on the website or app, verify your identity, add money, and then send transfers or spend with the Wise card.
Wise's availability as a multi-currency digital account means you can hold, send and spend money across currencies using the real exchange rate. Wise is a multi-currency account rather than a bank.
Setting up a Wise account involves these steps:
- Register: Open the Wise app or website and choose Register, then enter your email, set a password and pick a Personal or Business account.
- Confirm your phone: Wise sends a code to your phone number, which you enter to verify it.
- Add personal details: Give your legal name, date of birth and address.
- Verify identity: Upload a government-issued ID, such as a passport or driver's license, so Wise can check who you are.
Adding money to a Wise balance works like this:
- Start a top-up: On the Home screen of the Wise app, select Add Money.
- Pick currency and amount: Choose which currency balance to top up and type how much.
- Choose how to pay: Select a method such as a local bank transfer, a debit card or Apple Pay, then follow the prompts to finish.
Sending money with Wise follows a short flow:
- Select Send: Tap Send from the Home screen in the Wise app.
- Choose a recipient: Pick a saved recipient or enter a new person's bank details.
- Set the amount: Type either the amount you are sending or the amount the recipient should receive.
- Review the transfer: Choose a payment method and check the fees and expected delivery time Wise shows before paying.
- Confirm: Approve the transfer to send it.
The Wise card lets you spend from your balances:
- Get a card: Order a physical Wise debit card, or create a digital card straight away inside the app.
- Add it to a wallet: A Wise digital card can be added to mobile wallets like Apple Pay so it can be used right away.
- Spend abroad or online: When you pay, Wise takes the money from the matching currency balance, or converts the payment at the market rate.
