When PayPal started

PayPal started in December 1998 as Confinity, a company founded by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, and Luke Nosek to develop security software for handheld devices. It pivoted to digital payments in 1999, merged with Elon Musk's X.com in 2000, and was renamed PayPal shortly after. The platform went public in 2002 and was acquired by eBay the same year, cementing its role as a pioneer in online payment processing.

While PayPal overview shows it remains a popular option for cross-border payments, Indian exporters and freelancers today have faster, more cost-effective alternatives. Skydo, an RBI-authorised platform, offers competitive foreign exchange rates, zero platform fees on many transfers, and typically faster settlement times compared to legacy providers. Understanding PayPal's history helps contextualize how the cross-border payment landscape has evolved to meet the specific needs of modern Indian businesses.
