Where does PayPal work

PayPal works in more than 200 countries and regions, although the features available differ from one country to another.

In most supported markets, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and much of Europe, PayPal offers its full set of services. A PayPal overview for these countries covers the core functions below.

  • Money transfers: Users can send and receive money.
  • Shopping: PayPal can be used to pay online and in physical stores.
  • Balance: Users can hold a digital balance in their account.
  • Linked accounts: Local bank accounts and cards can be connected to PayPal.

Some countries allow PayPal only with limits, because of local financial laws and regulations. India is one example. There, PayPal does not handle domestic transfers or peer-to-peer payments, and it is used only to receive international business or freelance payments and to pay on global merchant websites with a linked card.

In a small number of countries, PayPal is banned or not supported at all due to international sanctions or local laws. These include:

  • Iran: PayPal services are unavailable.
  • North Korea: PayPal services are unavailable.
  • Syria: PayPal services are unavailable.
  • Afghanistan: PayPal services are unavailable.
  • Pakistan: PayPal services are unavailable.

PayPal publishes an official directory listing every supported country and region along with the currencies it handles, which is the place to confirm availability before opening an account.
