Why Payoneer exchange rate is low

The Payoneer exchange rate is low because Payoneer adds a foreign exchange markup, typically 2% to 3.5%, into the conversion rate rather than charging a separate visible fee.

The rate a user receives is therefore below the mid-market rate shown on Google. Some Payoneer users on Reddit report that the rates they get are consistently about 2% to 2.5% under the market rate.

  • FX markup: As with banks and many transfer services, Payoneer places a percentage margin on top of the interbank or mid-market rate, and this margin is its profit on the conversion.
  • Volatility and risk: Cross-border platforms adjust rates slightly to cover the risk that currencies move between the time a payment is processed and the time it clears.
  • Operating and compliance costs: Running global banking networks, compliance checks and local payout systems costs money, and part of that is recovered through the conversion spread.

Because the markup sits inside the rate, it is easy to miss when looking only at listed fees. Account opening on Payoneer is free, but the conversion margin still applies whenever money changes currency.

Ways to reduce the cost:

  • Withdraw in the same currency: Sending a balance to a local bank account in the matching currency, such as USD to USD, avoids the conversion markup and leaves only the flat withdrawal fee.
  • Smart FX tools: Payoneer's Smart FX features let users track rates and hold funds in the currency they arrived in until they choose to convert.
  • Compare the effective rate: A Payoneer vs Wise comparison shows how the conversion cost differs when a provider uses the mid-market rate, which helps put the markup in context.

To see the real cost of a conversion, compare the rate Payoneer offers with the mid-market rate at the same moment, and treat the gap as the fee paid on that transfer.
