What is the P0306 purpose code?

Purpose code P0306 is the residual code within the travel group. The group names specific codes for general travel receipts, business travel, medical treatment and education, and this one exists for a travel receipt that is none of those. It is residual but not unlimited: the money still has to relate to travel, so a receipt with no travel connection belongs in another group entirely rather than here. Because the general travel code is itself broad, most travel receipts settle there long before reaching this one, which makes P0306 rarer in practice than a residual code might suggest. Under RBI FEMA guidelines, this inward payment is classified under Travel and reported accordingly.

When to use P0306 purpose code?

Use P0306 only after working through the named travel codes and finding that none describes your receipt. The order matters here: check the general travel code first, since it covers foreign currency taken at the counter and transfers received from visitors alike and will account for most receipts; then check whether the travel was for business, medical treatment or education; and only then treat the receipt as residual. Two things need to be true before it applies: the money relates to travel, and no specific travel code fits.

When to use a different code:

  • Use P0301 when the receipt is a general travel receipt from a foreign visitor
  • Use P0302 when the travel is for business
  • Use the matching S-code when you are paying a foreign vendor rather than receiving money

Who typically uses P0306 purpose code

Indian businesses with a travel-related receipt that none of the named codes describes, which means whoever has already checked the specific codes and come up short. There is no typical user, since a code defined by exclusion has no natural constituency, and the breadth of the general travel code means most businesses will never need this one.

Examples of transactions covered under P0306 purpose code

  • A travel-related receipt that none of the general, business, medical or education travel codes describes
  • Money arising from a travel arrangement the code list does not anticipate
  • A one-off receipt clearly connected to travel but matching no named category
  • An inflow confirmed with the bank as a travel receipt, where no specific code was found to apply

When NOT to use P0306 purpose code

  • The receipt is a general travel payment from a foreign visitor, including currency taken at the counter or a transfer received (use P0301)
  • The travel is for business, medical treatment or education, each of which has its own code
  • The money has no travel connection at all, in which case it belongs under another group rather than this residual code
  • You are paying a foreign vendor rather than receiving (use the matching S-code)

Documents required for P0306 purpose code

To receive a payment under P0306, keep the following documents ready so your bank or platform can verify the transaction and report it correctly under FEMA.

DocumentPurpose
Documentation for the underlying arrangement - Establishes what the money is for, which matters more here than on any named codeInvoice or statement of the amount receivable - Sets out what is being paid and on what basis
Purpose declaration form - The inward remittance form where the purpose of funds is formally statedKYC documents (if requested) - Used to verify your business during onboarding or compliance checks

How is a P0306 Purpose Code declared?

Declaring the code is pretty straightforward. Here's how the payment gets tagged and reported.

  1. Check the named codes first: Work through the general, business, medical and education travel codes and confirm none describes your receipt.
  2. Receive the payment: The money is remitted to your Indian bank account or taken across the counter.
  3. Declare the purpose: State the purpose of the inward remittance, describing what the money is for rather than relying on the code to explain it.
  4. Submit supporting documents: Provide the underlying documentation so the bank can verify the transaction and confirm the residual code is right.
  5. Get your FIRA: Once processed, your FIRA is issued as proof and the payment is reported under FEMA.
  6. With a traditional bank you handle each step of your payment journey. But with a platform built for cross-border payments, you can preselect a default purpose code so that the payments land smooth.

Common mistakes to avoid while using P0306 purpose code

A few common slips can hold up your payment or cause compliance issues. Here's what to watch for.

  1. Skipping past the general travel code: Reaching for P0306 without checking P0301 first, when the general travel code is broad enough to cover most visitor receipts and will usually be the right answer.
  2. Using it for receipts with no travel connection: Treating P0306 as a general catch-all, when the money must still relate to travel and anything else belongs in a different group.
  3. Code and document mismatch: The code not matching what your documentation describes, which flags the payment and matters more here since the code itself explains nothing.
  4. Incomplete documents: Missing the underlying documentation, so the bank cannot establish what the money is and holds funds until provided.
  5. Missing PAN or KYC: Incomplete verification stops the bank from releasing the payment.
  6. Using an inward code for an outward payment: Applying a receipt code to money you're sending out instead of the matching outward code.
