What is the P1008 purpose code?

Purpose code P1008 covers money received from abroad for research and development, meaning work that creates new knowledge, products or processes rather than applying knowledge that already exists. That is what separates it from the codes on either side: market research investigates an audience and sits under P1007, while engineering and technical services apply established methods and sit under P1009. R&D contracts often produce intellectual property, and where the client later pays for the use of that output the money is a licensing receipt reported under a different group, so one relationship can generate receipts under more than one code. Under RBI FEMA guidelines, this inward payment is classified under Other Business Services and reported accordingly.

When to use P1008 purpose code?

Use P1008 when an overseas client pays you for research and development delivered from India, whether that is a contract research programme, a discovery or testing phase, or product and process development. It is the correct RBI purpose code for the research work itself. Where the same client later pays for the use of intellectual property arising from that work, that payment reports separately under the intellectual property codes rather than here.

When to use a different code:

  • Use P1007 when the research is market research or public opinion polling rather than research and development
  • Use P1009 when the work is architectural, engineering, or other technical services applying established knowledge
  • Use the matching S-code when you are paying a foreign vendor rather than receiving money

Who typically uses P1008 purpose code

Indian contract research organisations, pharmaceutical and life sciences research businesses, engineering and product development centres, and research units working for overseas clients or a foreign parent. It applies whether you invoice as an individual researcher, a proprietorship, or a registered organisation.

Examples of transactions covered under P1008 purpose code

  • Fees received from an overseas pharmaceutical client for contract research work
  • Payment for a product development programme carried out for a foreign business
  • Milestone payment on a research contract with an international client
  • Charges for testing and development work performed in India for an overseas customer

When NOT to use P1008 purpose code

  • The research is market research or public opinion polling rather than research and development (use P1007)
  • The work is architectural, engineering, or other technical services applying established knowledge (use P1009)
  • The payment is for the client's use of intellectual property arising from the research rather than for the research work itself, which reports under the intellectual property codes
  • You are paying a foreign vendor rather than receiving (use the matching S-code)

Documents required for P1008 purpose code

To receive a payment under P1008, keep the following documents ready so your bank or platform can verify the transaction and report it correctly under FEMA.

DocumentPurpose
Commercial invoice - Describes the research or development work provided and the amount billed to the overseas clientResearch contract or Statement of Work - Confirms the scope, the phases or milestones, and the terms agreed with the client
Purpose declaration form - The inward remittance form where the purpose of funds is formally statedKYC documents (if requested) - Used to verify your organisation during onboarding or compliance checks

How is a P1008 Purpose Code declared?

Declaring the code is pretty straightforward. Here's how the payment gets tagged and reported.

  1. Raise your invoice: Bill your overseas client for the research or development work, describing the phase or milestone completed.
  2. Receive the payment: The client sends the money to your bank or receiving account.
  3. Declare the purpose: State the purpose of the inward remittance, on your bank's form or through your platform.
  4. Submit supporting documents: Provide the invoice, research contract, and KYC so the bank can verify the transaction.
  5. Get your FIRA: Once processed, your FIRA is issued as proof and the payment is reported under FEMA.
  6. With a traditional bank you handle each step of your payment journey. But with a platform built for cross-border payments, you can preselect a default purpose code so that the payments land smooth.

Common mistakes to avoid while using P1008 purpose code

A few common slips can hold up your payment or cause compliance issues. Here's what to watch for.

  1. Coding market research as R&D: Using P1008 because the work is called research, when investigating a market or an audience belongs under P1007 and only work creating new knowledge, products or processes sits here.
  2. Carrying the code into the licensing phase: Continuing to use P1008 after the research ends and the client begins paying for the use of the output, which is an intellectual property receipt under a different group.
  3. Code and invoice mismatch: The code not matching what your research contract describes, which flags the payment.
  4. Incomplete documents: Missing the contract or invoice, so the bank cannot establish what the work was and holds funds until provided.
  5. Missing PAN or KYC: Incomplete verification stops the bank from releasing the payment.
  6. Using an inward code for an outward payment: Applying a receipt code to money you're sending out instead of the matching outward code.

How Skydo simplifies inward remittance under P1008 Purpose Code

With a bank, you declare the purpose code on your own for every single payment. With Skydo, you can preselect your code once and every payment gets tagged automatically.

  1. Preselect the code once: Set P1008 as your default and Skydo tags every incoming payment for you, so there's no form to fill on each one.

  3. Instant, free FIRA: Your remittance proof is generated and stored on every payment, ready for your CA, GST, and audits, with no request and no fee.
  4. Zero FX markup: You get the live mid-market rate with a flat, visible fee, instead of a markup hidden inside the bank's rate.
  5. Settled in 24 hours: Your payment reaches your Indian bank within a day, fully reported and compliant.
