TL;DR - Summary

  • What is SBI export bill realisation? - SBI export bill realisation is the process by which an Indian exporter receives payment from a foreign buyer through the banking channel, with SBI acting as the authorized dealer bank that collects, verifies and credits the proceeds.
  • How does the SBI export bill realisation process work? - Submit documents, obtain SBI's bill reference, track collection and credit, then confirm receipt evidence and reporting. Advances and open-account exports follow different routes.
  • What documents are required? - Goods exporters need the invoice, packing list, transport document and shipping bill with the applicable declaration. Services need invoices, contracts and applicable EDF. Confirm SBI's payment-specific checklist.
  • How long does it take? - From 1 October 2026, the normal limit is nine months from goods shipment or service invoice, including software; exports invoiced and/or settled in INR have 12 months. Bank processing is separate.

What Is SBI Export Bill Realisation?

SBI export bill realisation is the process by which you, as an Indian exporter, receive the payment due from your foreign buyer through the banking channel after shipping goods or delivering services. SBI acts as the authorized dealer bank that collects, verifies and credits the proceeds.

Even after proceeds are realised and credited, SBI must match them to export records and complete the required reporting. Payment receipt and record closure are separate.

For example, a Surat textile exporter ships $5,000 of fabric to a US buyer. SBI receives and checks the payment, then credits or applies it under the settlement instructions. The exporter also checks that SBI has reconciled the shipment.

💡 QUICK INSIGHT

Under RBI's rules effective 1 October 2026, export proceeds are normally due within nine months of shipment for goods or invoice for services, including software. Exports invoiced and/or settled in INR have 12 months. An approved extension may apply.

How Does the SBI Export Bill Realisation Process Work Step by Step?

This SBI export bill realisation process describes documentary collection. Advances, open-account receipts and LC bills can follow different routes. Receipt evidence and reporting are not prerequisites for every account credit.

  1. Prepare and submit export documents: Give SBI its request/debit authority, FEMA declaration, invoice, shipping and transport records, and applicable LC/contract documents. Provide disposal instructions for settlement. Current declarations use EDF; see the document checklist below.
  2. Lodge the export bill: SBI records the collection bill and sends documents to the overseas bank. Obtain the reference and payment terms. An advance receipt is separately matched to the later export.
  3. Follow up with the foreign bank: Under DP, documents against payment, documents are released against payment. DA releases them against acceptance of a bill payable later. Acceptance is not payment; collecting banks do not guarantee payment.
  4. Receive the payment: SBI identifies the receipt using payment and export references. A SWIFT message alone does not prove account credit or completed export-record reconciliation.
  5. Credit to your EEFC or INR account: Instruct SBI to convert to INR or credit an eligible EEFC account in a supported currency. Export finance and bank checks may affect application of proceeds. EEFC's monthly conversion rule still applies.
  6. Obtain payment evidence and confirm reporting: Ask SBI for the applicable advice or BIRC and confirm receipt matching. FEDAI calls export-proceeds advice a Bank Inward Remittance Certificate (BIRC). A traditional FIRC is not automatic for every export; certificates alone do not prove EDPMS closure.

What are the Mandatory Documents Required for SBI Export Bill Realisation

Use the checklist below, plus any documents required by your LC or contract. Confirm SBI's request/debit authority, FEMA declaration, settlement instructions and KYC requirements. Receipt certificates come after payment, not before lodgement.

For Goods Exporters

  • Export declaration: Current goods exports use EDF, deemed included in EDI-port shipping bills; non-EDI exports use separate EDF. GR/SDF are older references, not extra forms for every shipment. The Export Data Processing and Monitoring System (EDPMS) tracks exports and realisation.
  • Commercial invoice: Shows the value, description and terms of the export transaction.
  • Packing list: Describes shipment contents; include it where required by customs, collection instructions or LC terms.
  • Bill of lading or airway bill: The applicable transport document for sea or air freight, recording shipment or acceptance for carriage.
  • Shipping bill: The customs export document, including deemed EDF for EDI-port exports. SBI uses its details to match receipts.
  • Letter of credit: Supply the LC details, amendments and documents required by its terms.
  • Insurance certificate: Include it when your sale terms or LC require insurance evidence, such as CIF or CIP shipments.

For Service/Software Exporters

  • Service-export declaration: Current rules use EDF, including for software. File within 30 days after the invoice month ends; non-software services may file on or before payment receipt. Confirm the route with SBI, STPI or the SEZ authority, as applicable.
  • Commercial invoice: The invoice for the service rendered.
  • Contract or purchase order: From the foreign client, to establish the commercial basis of the transaction.
  • Payment evidence: After receipt, retain the applicable advice and filing evidence. GST Rule 89 names relevant BRC/FIRC evidence for service-export refunds; goods and other refund categories differ. This is not a prerequisite for lodging an unpaid bill.

Common to Both

  • Covering letter: Addressed to SBI's trade finance department, listing the documents and requesting lodgement/realisation.
  • KYC documents: Your KYC documents, for first-time submissions or periodic renewal per SBI's internal policy.

✅ PRO TIP

Save document copies and submission acknowledgements. Check details before submission and explain valid differences rather than forcing every value to match.

SBI Export Bill Realisation Timeline: How Long Does It Take?

The realisation period is the deadline for receiving export proceeds. SBI's transaction-processing clock is separate: it ordinarily processes complete requests by the stated cut-off that business day, subject to checks. Neither a SWIFT alert nor request processing guarantees final credit.

RBI-Mandated Realisation Period

  • Standard period: From 1 October 2026, nine months from goods shipment or service invoice, including software; 12 months where invoiced and/or settled in INR. Shipping-bill filing and shipment dates are not necessarily identical. Confirm legacy deadlines and extensions with SBI.
  • Warehouses and projects: Warehouse exports normally have nine months from warehouse sale, or 12 months if invoiced and/or settled in INR. Project exports follow contract payment terms.

SBI Internal Processing Time

  • Transaction processing: Complete requests received by 3 p.m. on a business day are ordinarily processed that day; later requests the next business day. Credit still depends on funds, documents, compliance checks and approvals. Holidays can extend timing.
  • Receipt advice or certificate: Confirm the applicable document, delivery time and charge with SBI. Credit, advice availability and EDPMS reconciliation are separate milestones.

What Delays Realisation

  • Buyer or overseas-bank delay: Check whether payment is overdue, a DA bill has matured, or a banking query or routing issue is pending.
  • Document discrepancies: Missing records, incorrect references or differences from LC terms can require correction. Resolve the specific discrepancy before resubmitting.
  • Matching delays: Missing or mismatched export details can prevent EDPMS closure. Ask SBI what remains outstanding and how it recorded the receipt.

Consequences of Missing the RBI Deadline

  • Unpaid bills remain under SBI's EDPMS monitoring and follow-up after the applicable deadline or extension. Reporting does not begin only when a bill becomes overdue.
  • Ask SBI for an extension with reasons and supporting documents. The authorised dealer can approve justified requests; an RBI application is not automatic.
  • A FEMA contravention may attract penalties after adjudication. If proceeds remain unrealised beyond one year after the due date or approved extended period, further exports must be against full advance or an irrevocable LC. Existing Caution List orders may also continue to apply.

SBI Charges and Fees for Export Bill Realisation

SBI's forex tariff effective 1 October 2026 varies by transaction, customer category and value. Banks cannot charge merely for a customer's regulatory delay or violation; genuine service charges are separate.

  • Collection or handling charges: For non-export-credit customers' collection/handling with dispatch, the published charge is 0.12%, minimum ₹500 and maximum ₹20,000 per shipping bill/EDF. Other categories differ.
  • SWIFT and courier charges: ₹500 per outward SWIFT message, with the personal-segment exemption. Incoming SWIFT and obligatory acknowledgements/tracers are free. Check courier and overseas-bank costs separately.
  • Foreign currency conversion or forex spread: Compare SBI's conversion quote with a market reference at the same time. The rate affects net INR even without a separate fee line. EEFC receipts are not immediately converted.
  • Certificate charges: e-FIRC issuance is free, but usage fees can depend on customer category, value and intended use. e-BRC is listed as nil. These are not a universal FIRC issuance charge.
  • Overdue or follow-up costs: Ask SBI to identify the service and tariff. Obligatory SWIFT tracers are exempt; a regulatory delay alone does not justify a bank fee or penalty.
  • Amendment or discrepancy charges: These depend on the tariff, customer category and transaction terms. A discrepant presentation is not the same as an LC amendment.

Compare net proceeds after conversion, charges, taxes and overseas deductions. Get a transaction-specific quote rather than relying on headline fees.

💡 QUICK INSIGHT

Compare exchange rates as well as visible fees. The rate difference matters, but is not necessarily every bill's largest cost.

How to Track Your Export Bill Realisation Status in SBI

Use e-Trade on YONO Business where enabled, or contact SBI with your bill reference. Track payment receipt, account credit and export-record status separately.

Online / Net Banking

  • e-Trade on YONO Business supports export-bill and inward-remittance services, plus EDPMS enquiry, reconciliation and extension requests. Confirm your enabled functions and permissions.
  • Onboarding can start online or through the branch. Complete SBI's documents, branch formalities and user permissions for YONO Business/e-Trade access.

Branch-Level Follow-Up

  • Contact the trade-finance branch or RM with bill, invoice and export references. Ask for the current stage, due date and action needed.
  • SBI offers SMS/email credit alerts. Confirm your enabled notifications, but check document matching and EDPMS closure separately.

SWIFT Copy Request

  • Request available payment advice or SWIFT details using the bill/remittance references. These help identify the sender, amount, value date and route.
  • Use these details to investigate deductions or missing funds, not as proof of final credit or EDPMS closure.

EDPMS Status

  • SBI must update or close EDPMS alongside account credit after its checks. Final mark-off requires realised export value; partial receipts may update rather than close the record.
  • Use e-Trade's EDPMS enquiry/reconciliation services or ask SBI for status. Separately, DGFT lets exporters view bank-uploaded IRMs and self-certify eBRCs. An eBRC does not prove SBI's EDPMS closure.

Practical Tracker Tip

Track export type, invoice/shipment dates, applicable deadline, approved extension, SBI reference, follow-up date and status. Calculate deadlines using the rules above; confirm older bills' due dates with SBI. Use this alongside bank tools.

For payments through Skydo, download your free automatic Foreign Inward Remittance Advice (FIRA) from the dashboard without a separate branch request. It records payment, not EDPMS closure.
